MAY WORKSHOP RETREAT:
WATERCOLOUR WITH EVELYN DUNPHY
This week begins our workshop retreat season with Retreat to Deep Ireland. As part of the immersion into the history and beauty of Beara as inspiration to our writing, we will be taking part in the 100th anniversary commemoration of the Titanic passing by Dursey Island, the last land that the passengers would see, on their fateful voyage.
In addition to year-round individual retreats during which residents come to work on their own projects, we are offering five more week-long workshop retreats in 2012.
Next in the schedule is another Beara-inspired workshop retreat, Evelyn Dunphy's week working with watercolours. Please contact Evelyn directly to book your place. Below is an example of her work and details of her workshop at Anam Cara.
"Path to Landfall"
Watercolour Workshop Retreat
Facilitator: Evelyn Dunphy (www.evelyndunphy.com)
Arrival: 12 May 2012
Departure: 19 May 2012
For more information and bookings, contact Evelyn at artist@evelyndunphy.com
"Come and experience the haunting beauty of the landscape that surrounds Anam Cara. Explore ways to find just the right mixtures of pigments to paint all of those wonderful greens, the brightly-colored houses winding their way down the lane and the misty mountains off in the distance - it's an artists' paradise!
"You'll learn to simplify shapes, exaggerate, crop, compose, and build a composition that enables you to enjoy seeing pigments mix and dance on your paper. Be a poet rather than a reporter, paint light and color and shadow, and develop your ability to really "see". There will a demonstration each day, and lots of individual attention. There is nothing like uninterrupted hours of painting time to see a great leap in the quality of your work. No matter what your level of painting ability, there is always so much more to learn and experience.
"My goal is always to enlarge each student's vocabulary of painting 'tools' so that each person has the necessary skills to express their own personal aesthetic. It is necessary to be able to execute the fundamental techniques of using watercolor, and I also believe that passion drives technique; if you really want to paint something you will figure out how to do it. Experienced painters will be challenged and encouraged to move out of their "comfort zone" to realize their goals, and beginners will be guided through the process of using watercolor.
"I also think it's very important to 'name the thing you are trying to do' - whether it's the pigment with its temperature and value, or the concept for your painting. Naming it makes it possible to actually do it."
Recommendations:
"I am just beginning to realize how much I learned from you in the workshop. Things that I thought I knew but did not really understand have come to life for me, and my work shows it" - a student from a recent workshop in Canada.
If you want a workshop with a dedicated, talented teacher who is also a beautiful painter, go with Evelyn Dunphy" - a student from a workshop at Frederic Church's camp

ONE DAY SUNSET / TWILIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP 7th APRIL 2012
On Saturday 7th April, we are holding a One day Sunset Photography Workshop at Ownahincha, meeting at 2.00 pm and carrying on until it gets too dark to make anymore photographs.
We will start the afternoon getting to grips with our cameras, tripods, filters and composition. We will stop for a meal at around 5.00pm for about an hour, so people have the chance to get some food or go off and use the facilities. Then we will return to a great beach with plenty of rocks etc for foreground interest, photograph the setting sun and then we will carry on to get the twilight shots, long exposures, misty wave effects etc. We will stop when its too dark or too cold to carry on.
This is a workshop aimed at the absolute beginner or improver, but anyone is welcome to join in, it is a fantasti location for seascapes and sunsets. There will be 2 lecturers in attendance, ensuring everyone gets personal attention.
We will cover the basics of aperture, shutter, ISO, metering and white balance. We will show the use of filters and tripods. You will learn the basics of composition, depth of field and hyperfocal focusing for those a bit more advanced.
You will be presented with many opportunities to make some fantastic photographs, no matter what the weather is.
You need to bring your camera equipment, batteries fully charged, (and camera manuals), a packed meal and a note book and pen to make your own notes. There will be a couple of spare tripods for those who do not yet own one.
The cost of the course is reduced to 60.00 euros per person.
Meals, drinks and any entrance fees are NOT included in the course fee.
To book a place on the course the full course fee is payable in advance. Payment accepted by credit card over the phone, or by cash / cheque by post or in person.

You are invited to attend the Save Bantry Bay public meeting, at 8.15pm this Saturday, the Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff.
After a recent public meeting in Adrigole a group was formed to oppose the proposed salmon farm by Marine Harvest at Shot Head, Trafrask, Adrigole. The group ‘Save Bantry Bay’ is holding a meeting on Saturday, 24 March, at the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff at 8.15 PM to update everyone on the situation.
Chairman Kieran O’Shea, a third generation fisherman from Adrigole, and local Angling Association Secretary Alex O’Donovan, will give a presentation outlining wide ranging objections. This will highlight the fierce opposition to the farm, and how it has brought together diverse interests from across the peninsula.
Fishermen claim that the site of more than 100 acres will limit their ability to make a living, closing off part of an important ground for shrimp and prawn. Tourist interests have quoted studies in Scotland that show that certain tourists do not return to an area with fish farms as they spoil the natural beauty.
Save Bantry Bay is also particularly concerned with the impact of sea lice on the wild salmon as there are 5 salmon rivers entering the bay, all of which will be put at risk. The latest research shows that almost half of the wild salmon populations were lost in bays with salmon farms.
A further problem is the waste produced by salmon farms. It is estimated that in the year 2000, 350 Scottish salmon farms produced a level of waste that had an ecological result which was effectively greater than the sewage produced by Scotland’s 5.1 million humans. Using calculation methods outlined in this study it can be estimated that the Shot Head salmon production of 2,700 tons of fish a year would equate to sewage from a city of 47,000 people – multiple times the population of Bantry Bay.
If you are concerned about any of the above, or would like to learn more about the proposed salmon farm in Bantry Bay, please do attend out meeting.
There will also be a showing of the film Salmonopoly, a documentary about the environmental destruction caused by Marine Harvest’s operation in Chile.
